So I'm in the process of applying to SMAD Creative Advertising and I will be in the market for a new laptop soon. For reference I'm currently working on an 11' MacBook Air that I bought in 2013, it's still running but I don't know for how much longer. I'm tired of programs not being compatible because they are windows only.
I've heard that a mac is practically required for SMAD so would it be a bad idea to buy a windows laptop? I did a fair bit of work in Photoshop, Illustrator, and Flash on a windows pc while I was in high school so I know the system well.
Any feedback is appreciated, thank you. I would advise you to buy a powerful PC and stick Adobe CC on it. The modern MACs are massively overpriced for what you get hardware wise. Also they can only be serviced by Apple Authorized Service Providers.
(If it breaks you are going to be forced to pay a few hundred dollars for a $50 repair.)If you are concerned about ease of use, Windows 10 is pretty easy to use on modern hardware. Just make sure the computer has good specs (And uninstall any pre installed bloatware, see for help in this area).I also know people who used Windows and Linux for SMAD. The only time it is a issue is when a class requires you to use iMovie or Final Cut. When this happens you have a few alternatives.
You take more photos and videos than ever—to capture your moods, relate your experiences, and express your point of view. And since your life is wall-to-wall classes and clubs, studying and socializing, you need a better, faster way to manage and make the most of all those shots and clips sitting in your phone or camera. You can use the Macs in the SMAD lab. If you are on Windows you can use Adobe CC or Davinci Resolve. If you are on linux you can use Davinci Resolve.Regardless if you get a Mac, Windows, or Linux machine you are going to want the following specs to last you 4 years in your major (as of January 2018):.CPU: Intel i5 OR AMD Ryzen 5 or better (i7 or Ryzen 7 are better) ( Used when exporting files from editors like Adobe CC or Final Cut).RAM: 12GB absolute minimum. 16GB or better.
(Needed for working memory, more is better).GPU: NVIDIA GeForce 9xx series OR AMD Radeon HD 77xx series or better (NVIDIA Quadro M12xx series or AMD Radeon Pro 5xx series are better) ( Needed for Adobe CC to run smoothly).Storage: 512GB SSD or NVMe SSD minimum ( You will want a Solid State drive for your system disk). If you are doing video work you might want to consider computer with a second 1TB or 2TB HDD for storing your projects OR buy a external hard drive.Do not buy a low end PC or MAC! You will have problems with it when you are running demanding software (Like Adobe CC). You would be better off saving up for a better system while using the SMAD lab and your existing laptop in the meantime. Adobe CC is garbage on PC I will say that. The interface is clunky, there are virtually no extra short cuts to make your work process run smoothly.
Even small things like being able to turn on 'auto click to select layer' in Photoshop, that setting doesn't exist on CC for Windows. So you have to mouse over to the layers panel and manually select the layer you want to work on, or control+click.Might seem nit picky, but like Matt Groening said on why the Simpsons only have 4 fingers 'That's a lot of pencil mileage if you add another finger.' Here is what I would do. Find out what is wrong with your old Macbook Air and get it fixed. If it's cosmetic it might not be worth it, if its things like it needs a new battery or fan, those are easy $50 -$100 fixes.
As long as your Air can run Microsoft office Suite and Adobe CC you're good. The SMAD labs have great IMacs that you should have access to at all times when there isn't a class in that particular lab. I did a lot of work on the desktops there cause the screens are huge and they are there for you to use. They are accessible 24 hours by scanning your JacCard (note Harrison Hall locks at midnight so make sure if you leave the building you know someone else inside who can let you in). What I absolutely wouldn't do is buy anything not Mac. I'm by no means an Apple fan boy, but Windows is quite frankly shit when it comes to the Creative Cloud. I was using Adobe on Macs for 10 years or so (through high school and college) I had one internship where I was required to use the company laptop (PC) and the Creative Cloud works of course, but the interface is clunky and time consuming.Edit: If you've only worked on Creative Cloud on a PC prepare for your life to get a lot easier working on the Mac versions.
Even though CC is seamless between PC and Macs now you're going to run into some problems bouncing project between the Macs in the lab and your personal PC. Some professors give time to work on projects during class and you don't want to have to worry about being stuck on your little PC laptop cause for whatever reason you can't open your files on the lab computers.Edit 2: You'll also be a freshman and on campus I assume.
So if you really can't afford to fix your Mac or buy a new one, then you probably can't afford a low end PC anyway, but if for some reason you have to buy a PC for the rest of your classes or get one for cheap, you should be able to do most of your projects in Harrison on the lab computers.
